Dry Flies

Welcome to DryFlies.co.uk your online resource for everything related to dry flies. We hope to keep this site updated weekly with the latest news.
Dry flies are used by fly fishermen to lure trout to the surface to accept an imitative fly pattern tied on a hook. The pattern can be made of numerous suitable materials to enable it to float or hover in the surface film of the water.

The majority of a trouts diet is taken beneath the surface of the water and fly fisherman can target fish beneath the water with wet flies or nymphs etc. However, the visual stimulus of seeing a trout “rise to the fly” delicately presented on the waters surface, is a great attraction for a lot of fly fishers and the main reason why they chose to fly fish using this technique.

Some examples of various types of dry flie are listed below:

  • Terrestrials - Ants
  • beetles
  • grasshoppers.

May flies - Quite large even size 8 or 10’s, drakes, often used during the famous “duffers fortnight” on English chalk streams and rivers.

  • Caddis
  • Stone flies
  • Midges
  • CDC - Cul de canard
